For a series of works entitled ‘Encore’ I chose the sky as a subject. I chose to focus on the sky after researching the work of Jon Schueler; before he was a painter, Schueler navigated a B-17 bomber during World War II. For him, the sky became a place filled with both anxiety and beauty, and his work after the war focused mainly on large scale skyscapes. I love the idea of the sky as a connection to the past. I thought of people in past eras looking at the sky the same way we do and the sky as a constant that never changes but also is ever-changing – no sunrise or sunset is ever the same and the moving clouds never look the same one second to the next. I tried to combat the limitations and challenges faced when trying to represent something as vast and ever-changing as the sky by using a multitude of small canvas’ in clusters depicting the sky in its myriad forms.
