This is a series of paintings about my own personal history after losing many of my physical memories in a 2017 house fire that destroyed about 90% of my family photos and all of my childhood videos. This work engages with this loss while also exploring what it means to lose these things that seem so irreplaceable. Working from the few images that survived, I painted with varied looseness to reflect how memory fades, fractures, and sometimes sharpens with time. It is also about the fleeting nature of early childhood memory. Often, we don’t remember a memory unless there is an anchor to that memory, for example a photograph, home video, or personal token. My work is about the remembrance of memory without these anchors, and the loss of things that you can’t even remember.
